My Uncle Bob from PA was an artist. I had always been in awe of his work,
and would show him the little drawings I drew as a child. He gave me such support & encouragement, and told me to 'keep
drawing' because I was very talented. When I was 9 years old I had fallen on the ice & shattered my hipbone, resulting
in my having major surgery to have the hip socket completely rebuilt. I was in a body case for about a year. Uncle Bob made
me a wooden art chest with hinges, and a drawing board...chock full of wonderful supplies: stacks of art paper, drawing pencils
& soft erasers, colored pencils, pastels, oil paints & watercolor paints, brushes ...everything I needed as a budding
young artist! There were even books with illustrations on how to get started. He mailed these to me & this is how I spend
a great deal of my time as I was recovering. Practice makes perfect, and little by little my work got progressively better!
Thank God, I did recover from the surgery - had to learn to walk all over again and, about a year later had similar surgery
on the OTHER hip (?!!!) Of course, more time to draw & paint !! I will always be thankful for my Uncle Bob Ray, who gave
me the encouragement, hope & enthusiasm to create that I needed to become the artist I am today. Altho he passed away
some years ago, I believe his spirit will always be with me, reminding me to "keep drawing, keep painting" !!
